Perfectly balanced with a blend of gochujang, sesame oil, and tangy vinegar, this easy-to-make recipe is ideal for serving with steamed rice or noodles, garnished with fresh green onions and sesame seeds.
Ingredients
Sweet Chili Sauce
- 1/4 cup water plus 1-2 tbsp more to adjust consistency
- 1 tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 tbsp tomato ketchup
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar or regular white vinegar
Tofu Balls
- 1 tbsp oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 15 pieces air-fried tofu balls (see homemade recipe or substitute with meatballs of your choice)
For Serving
- Chopped green onions or scallions for topping
- Sesame seeds for topping
- Steamed rice or noodles
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: In a medium bowl, combine water, gochujang, tomato ketchup, sesame oil, sesame seeds, sugar, and vinegar. Mix well and adjust the water quantity by 1-2 tablespoons if you prefer a thinner consistency.
- Sauté the garlic: Heat a large pan over medium heat and add the oil. Once hot, add the minced garlic and sauté until it becomes aromatic and lightly browned, about 1-2 minutes.
- Cook the sauce: Pour the prepared chili sauce mixture into the pan with the garlic. Allow it to simmer over medium heat until it boils and starts to thicken slightly, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Add tofu balls: Add the air-fried tofu balls to the simmering sauce. Stir gently to ensure each ball is fully coated with the sauce.
- Simmer and coat: Let the tofu balls cook in the sauce for 1 to 2 minutes, allowing the glaze to thicken and the flavors to meld together.
- Final touches and serving: Turn off the heat. Garnish with chopped green onions and additional sesame seeds if desired. Serve the sweet chili tofu balls hot alongside steamed rice or noodles. Enjoy!
Notes
- You can adjust the level of sweetness or spiciness by modifying the amount of sugar or gochujang in the sauce according to your preference.
- If you don’t have air-fried tofu balls, baked or pan-fried tofu balls or even meatballs can be used as a substitute.
- For a gluten-free version, ensure that the gochujang and ketchup used are gluten-free.
- Use fresh garlic for the best aroma and flavor in the sauce.
- This dish pairs wonderfully with simple steamed rice or noodles to balance the bold flavors.
