Ingredients
Onions
- 2 large sweet onions
Butter and Seasoning Mixture
- 2 tablespoons butter, divided
- 2 teaspoons chili onion crunch
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked paprika or regular)
- 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
- 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning blend
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning blend
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F to prepare for baking the onions evenly.
- Prepare Onions: Peel the onions and carefully cut a 1-inch diameter hole at the top of each using a paring knife.
- Scoop Out Onions: Use a small spoon or butter knife to hollow out each onion, creating a well that goes halfway down into the onion to be filled later.
- Add Butter to Onions: Slice 1 tablespoon of the butter into two pieces and place one piece inside the hollow well of each onion.
- Make Seasoning Mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. To the melted butter, add chili onion crunch, minced garlic, paprika, Old Bay seasoning, Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper, mixing well to combine.
- Fill and Coat Onions: Pour the butter and seasoning mixture evenly into the wells of the onions and spread some of it over the sides for extra flavor.
- Wrap and Bake: Wrap each onion tightly in foil and place them in a baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the onions are fork tender. Check at 50 minutes and continue baking if needed, checking every 10 minutes depending on onion size.
- Serve: Carefully peel back the foil from the top of the onions. Optionally, add more melted butter and seasonings before serving for enhanced richness.
Notes
- Use large sweet onions for the best flavor and size for filling.
- Adjust seasoning blends based on your spice preference or substitute with your favorite blends.
- Check tenderness with a fork to avoid over- or undercooking; larger onions may require longer baking times.
- Serve immediately for best taste and texture.
- To make it vegan, substitute butter with a plant-based alternative.
