Ingredients
Sweet Potatoes
- 3 sweet potatoes, halved
- 1-2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Ground black pepper, to taste
Cinnamon Sugar Butter
- 6-8 tablespoons butter, softened (regular or plant-based)
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- Pinch of allspice
- Pinch of kosher salt
Instructions
- Preheat Smoker: Preheat your smoker to 225°F to prepare for slow smoking the sweet potatoes.
- Season Potatoes: Place the sweet potatoes cut-side down on a sheet pan. Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt and ground black pepper. Massage the oil and seasonings evenly over the potatoes to ensure full coverage.
- Smoke Potatoes: Place the prepared sheet pan with the sweet potatoes into the preheated smoker. Smoke them for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 205°F, checking with a meat thermometer. The duration may vary depending on the size of your sweet potatoes.
- Prepare Butter Mixture: While the potatoes are smoking, combine softened butter, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, allspice, and a pinch of kosher salt in a small bowl. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated. Set aside.
- Serve: Once smoked, remove the sweet potatoes from the smoker and place them cut-side up. Add a generous dollop of the cinnamon sugar butter on top while the potatoes are warm, allowing the butter to melt and infuse the potatoes with sweet, spiced flavor. Enjoy immediately.
Notes
- Use a meat thermometer to accurately gauge when the sweet potatoes are perfectly cooked through.
- If you don’t have a smoker, this recipe can be adapted for an oven by roasting the sweet potatoes at 225°F, but the pure smoky flavor will differ.
- Plant-based butter works well if you prefer a dairy-free option.
- Adjust the amount of cinnamon and brown sugar in the butter to your taste preference.
- Leftover cinnamon sugar butter can be stored in the refrigerator and used on toast or pancakes.
