Description
Hasselback Potatoes are crispy, golden potatoes sliced thinly to create a fan-like appearance, baked with melted butter and seasoned with salt and pepper. This classic Swedish side dish offers a perfect balance of crispy edges and tender interiors, ideal for complementing any meal.
Ingredients
Potatoes
- 4 large russet potatoes, washed and patted dry
Seasoning and Butter
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, divided
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Arrange a rack in the middle position of the oven and preheat to 425°F. Set aside an unlined baking sheet for the potatoes.
- Slice the Potatoes: Position one potato between two chopsticks or skewers to prevent cutting all the way through. Make vertical slits about 1/8 inch apart down the potato, cutting until the knife hits the chopsticks and leaving the bottom intact. Repeat for all potatoes.
- Butter and Season: Place the sliced potatoes on the baking sheet. Using a basting brush, coat about half of the melted butter evenly over the entire potato, including inside the slits. Season with kosher salt and pepper.
- Initial Bake: Bake the potatoes for 30 minutes in the preheated oven to start cooking and crisping the edges.
- Separate Layers and Add More Butter: After 30 minutes, gently pull apart the potato layers with a knife to open the slits further. Brush the remaining melted butter all over the potatoes to enhance crispness and flavor.
- Final Bake: Return potatoes to the oven and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender inside and crispy on the outside. Cooking time may vary based on potato size.
- Serve: Remove from oven and serve warm, seasoning with additional salt and pepper to taste.
Notes
- Using chopsticks or skewers helps prevent slicing the potatoes all the way through.
- Adjust baking time depending on the size of the potatoes to ensure they are fully cooked but not dried out.
- Brush melted butter generously for a crispy, flavorful finish.
- This dish pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad.
- For extra flavor, add garlic or fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme in the butter before brushing.
