Baked until tender and seasoned with kosher salt and olive oil, this dish is a simple yet versatile side that can be topped with your favorite ingredients such as butter, sour cream, scallions, or cheese.
Ingredients
Potato
- 1 russet potato
Seasoning
- ½ tablespoon olive oil
- 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
Toppings
- Your favorite toppings (such as butter, sour cream, scallions, cheese, salt, pepper)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) to ensure a hot environment for crispy skin and even cooking.
- Prepare Potato: Scrub the russet potato thoroughly under cold running water to remove dirt. Pat the potato dry completely with a paper towel to help achieve crispiness.
- Pierce Potato: Use a fork to prick the potato all over, piercing the skin. This prevents steam build-up and potential bursting during baking.
- Season Potato: Place the potato on a baking sheet. Brush all sides evenly with olive oil to promote crispiness, then sprinkle kosher salt generously over the skin for flavor.
- Bake: Bake the potato in the preheated oven for 1 hour or until a toothpick or knife slides in easily with no resistance. For smaller potatoes, start checking at 45 minutes and thereafter every 10 minutes to avoid overcooking.
- Serve: Slice the top of the potato open, pinch the sides, and press down and in to open it up. Fluff the insides with a fork and add your favorite toppings like butter, sour cream, scallions, cheese, salt, and pepper. Serve immediately to enjoy the crispy skin and warm fluffy center.

- This recipe is for one potato but can be easily doubled or tripled to serve more people.
